An AI can produce a plausible-looking solution to a maths problem in seconds. That does not mean the solution is correct, and it does not mean you learned how to produce it yourself.
A better use of an AI math study assistant is to keep the reasoning in your hands. Attempt the problem, ask a narrow question when you get stuck, and use the response to examine your next step rather than replace the whole exercise.
Lutin can help without pulling you away from the material you are already using. Open it over your textbook, worksheet, lecture notes, or draft solution, ask about the point of confusion, and continue working where you started.
Ask for the next clue, not the final answer
When you are stuck, begin with the smallest amount of help that could get you moving again.
Try prompts such as:
- "Give me one hint, not the solution."
- "Which definition should I use here?"
- "What should I calculate next?"
- "Ask me a question that will help me find the next step."
- "What assumption am I making?"
This preserves the useful struggle of solving the problem while reducing the chance that one blocked step ends the study session.
If the hint is still too large, say so. Ask Lutin to reveal less, use a simpler example, or explain the relevant idea without applying it to your exact question.
Inspect your own working
A finished answer tells you very little about why your attempt went wrong. Showing your working gives the assistant something more useful to examine.
Ask:
- "Find the first step where my reasoning stops being valid."
- "Do not continue the solution; explain only that mistake."
- "Is this algebraic transformation allowed?"
- "Which step is correct but poorly justified?"
- "What quick check could reveal this error next time?"
Focusing on the first incorrect step is usually more helpful than receiving a clean replacement solution. You can correct the step and finish the rest without losing track of your own reasoning.
Request another representation
Sometimes the obstacle is not the calculation but the form of the explanation. A symbolic definition may become clearer as a diagram, table, numerical example, or plain-language description.
You can ask Lutin to:
- explain the symbols one by one;
- demonstrate the idea with small numbers;
- compare an algebraic and geometric interpretation;
- describe what changes when one variable increases;
- connect the formula to an earlier concept.
Then translate the explanation back into the representation used by your course. Being able to move between words, examples, and symbols is part of the learning.
Generate practice with a purpose
More questions are not automatically better practice. Ask for a small set that targets the exact idea you are learning.
For example:
Give me three questions about the chain rule: one direct application, one requiring simplification first, and one where the chain rule should not be used. Do not show the answers yet.
Complete the questions before requesting feedback. If you miss one, ask what misconception the error suggests and request one similar question. Stop when you can explain why the method applies, not merely when you reproduce the same steps.
Keep formulas with your explanation

Check the answer
AI models can make arithmetic errors, omit conditions, choose an unsuitable method, or confidently justify an invalid step. Treat the response as help to inspect, not an answer key.
Before accepting a result:
- Substitute it back into the original equation when possible.
- Check units, signs, bounds, and domain restrictions.
- Estimate whether the size and direction are reasonable.
- Compare with a worked example or authoritative source.
- Ask which assumptions the result depends on.
For assessed work, follow the AI policy set by your school, university, and course. If assistance must be disclosed, keep a clear record of how you used it.
Keep the thinking yours
A useful session with Lutin should leave you able to explain the method without Lutin. Ask for a hint, inspect your attempt, request another representation, and practise the weak step. Save the explanation only after you have made it your own.
The shortest route to an answer is not always the shortest route to learning.
